about

We recorded this in the basement of Dave Schools' house in Athens, Georgia. Outside, David Barbe manned the sound truck (rented to us by Jim Hawkins for Electro-Acoustic Systems). This all took place the first 2 weeks of July, 2001. The schedule for each day's recording was approximately 4:00 PM til 4:00 AM. We all had a great time, and the few obstacles thrown our way only served to make us stronger! The snake who crawled in the basement door and took up residence in the back of an amp seemed friendly enough. And the girl living upstairs who didn't want us coming in one day because "she had pneumonia" listened to reason when the mighty Gomer sat down with her and explained life.

These recording sessions wound up documenting some of my old favorites ("Like This", which I wrote while walking the train tracks from North Avenue to downtown Athens back in 1988, and "You're Gonna Die Tomorrow", which I wrote while wandering Broadway in NYC in April 1991), plus some new staples: "Cheap Speed", "Liquor Ain't Love", "Ravin' Beauties", etc. Aside from recording, there were fevered Strat-O-Matic baseball drafts, and Leah's pool, and daytime trips to the bars in Normaltown. This was making a record with friends. A fine way to spend a big chunk of the summer in the dizzy, simmering Athens, GA I've always loved.
